Another night in Resolve40's New York
By Mark Wiener & Linda Di Gusta
Thursday
10:00 PM
Relaxing at our favorite spot on West 27th Street, mellowed by the mixological artistry of Marisol the bartender, we encountered our friend, photographer Linda Obuchoska, and met her artist friend Roger Welch, winding down from a night in the galleries. They asked what we had been up to, and we flashed back to:
5:15 PM
We set out from our east side studio on a busy night for art. How will we make all of our stops between 6 and 8? Taxis, of course.
5:45 PM
We are still in Midtown looking for a cab. Having failed to catch even (egads!), a bus on Madison that will get us to 57th street, we head back to 38th and Park, where we spy a cabby dropping off passengers at a hotel. After a mad dash through a red light to his shining beacon, we are underway.
5:55 PM
Thanks to rush hour traffic and no-turn rules, we only now turn onto Madison at 35th Street and are at last actually headed up to the Fuller Building.
6:10 PM
Up to the seventh floor and AFP Gallery, where we meet the eloquent and passionate Ellen Frank at a one-night preview of her astonishing series of gold-leaf paintings, "Cities of Peace." Despite the courageous efforts of two gentlemen who feel it is their duty to repeatedly tempt us with elegant stemware and fine wine, we must make do with just a taste from the lovely cheese plates before we fly.
6:30 PM
Our current driver informs us that, in order to arrive in SoHo, our choice is between a diversion to the far West Side, or turning around once again in Midtown traffic. We decide on the latter, only to find the crush further exacerbated by a vivid, vocal anti-fur protest across 5th Avenue from a Fendi opening. Wondering briefly why we do this, but grateful our beat is not as political as fashion, we crawl on and reach our downtown destination at…
6:55 PM
…when we find ourselves catching the opening of a group show at Sumi Gallery, where as always we are enchanted by the grace and simple beauty of the space. Alas, we only have time to traverse those marvelous pools of lighted crystal set into the floor once, because it is now…
7:05 PM
We only have until 8 to get to West Chelsea and view the opening night of an open studio event, which will conclude Saturday at 6.
7:15PM
Ready to explore 10 floors of open studios at 526 West 26th Street, we decide to start at the top and join the long line for the wonderfully ancient elevator, which has the character of a little office, and the incredibly friendly, patient and helpful man who is it's operator. Still spinning from our travels, we are refreshed by the homey welcome of the artists to their own special spaces. Turning a corner on the 9th Floor, at the far end of a long hallway, we are confronted by the formidable eyes of a much-larger-than-life-baby, distorted to perfection by painter Melora Griffis. Yes. This is why we do this.
