With so much buzzing about the big business of art on Manhattan Island, it's easy to forget the that it's also the geographic center of a vital progressive community where all sorts of artists live and work, every day. Who are they? Get to know some of them by catching 2 of this summer's most community-intensive group exhibitions downtown.
Through September 24th, the Hudson Guild presents the organization's 11th Annual Community Art Jam. Celebrating the diversity and energy of the NYC creative community, the exhibition was open to any artist ready, willing and able to attend the July 31st opening, grab a hammer, and place their own work on the gallery walls. A stone's throw from Chelsea's most prestigious galleries, timed with their big season openings, it's a great opportunity for artists, dealers, and the public to check out who is waiting in the wings.

Head east and south for a show with a real sense of place and history - in a city where the character of neighborhoods has changed so dramatically that many lament the death of their traditional distinctions, curator Robert Curcio presents a show that celebrates the continuing vibrant spirit of the East Village.

For some of the freshest art around, tour the neighborhood and wind up at chashama ABC for "Tax-Free Art", and exhibition featuring works by current members of chashama's artist-in residency program. Taking advantage of the dynamic real estate market in town, the organization finds a way to grant currently unused space to talented, dedicated artists at a subsidized rate, keeping the notion that Manhattan can still nurture and inspire new artists alive into the 21st Century.
