Thanksgiving weekend: reading Sunday’s New York Times coverage of 2 museum exhibitions of the works of Saul Steinberg, we couldn’t help but notice that one more exhibition really belongs on the wish list of this artist’s admirers.
Tucked away in the ground floor of a graceful brownstone at 79th and Park, the always sophisticated and surprising Adam Baumgold Gallery will present “Saul Steinberg: WORKS FROM THE 50's-80's“. The exhibition features "Rodozachari Table," 1981, a large mixed media table assemblage that incorporates the tools of Steinberg's art: whittled wooden pencils, paint brushes, and drawing pads, as well as his speech balloons, rubber stamps, assorted themes, symbols, and obsessions. Also included are one of Steinberg’s original sketchbooks, many early drawings from the 1950's and 1960's, and variants of New Yorker cover designs.
