- Cipriani Wall Street
NY.101
Artist Lello Esposito of Naples says, “my own history is also the history of the city of Naples”, this presentation marks his “starting a dialogue with New York,” in order to immerse himself and truly understand the identity of the City. A glittering assemblage from NY and across the Atlantic celebrated Esposito’s glittering new work at Cipriani Wall Street, where all were treated to unmatched hospitality, live entertainment, and fascinating films of the artist at work in his studio and the foundry presented on two huge screens looming over the grand hall.
To really “get” the New York of 2006, Esposito could not have picked a better starting point. Cipriani occupies a Greek Revival style structure built in 1842, which once housed the New York Stock Exchange. Our walk from City Hall took us past both Ground Zero and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s “Swing Space,” where the organization has set up an artist-in-residence program to spur the area’s recovery after 9/11, then down to Wall Street, which recalls New York’s long history as a financial center, yet reveals a downtown doubly transformed by the surge of residential real estate development and the functional landscaping put in place since 2001 for added security.
Welcome to our town, Lello Esposito.
Note: Lello Esposito’s latest work, titled “AZ - 09” consists of installations made up of 365 different pieces of cast aluminum, in shapes including numerals, letters and masks. An installation is currently on view at Viromare, 547 West 27th Street, 5th Floor
